Employee Highlight: Dave McKay – A Truck Driver’s Track in Running

Dave McKay, one of our dedicated drivers, has a passion that goes beyond the open road—running. His journey with running started as a kid in Brooks, Alberta, when a friend asked if he wanted to join him for regular runs to visit his grandpa. What started as a simple weekly activity turned into a lifelong commitment to fitness.

At just 14, Dave made a personal vow: “I will not stop running or working out.” That promise, written and signed by him, has been a driving force in his life. Today, as a truck driver, Dave continues to balance his demanding career with his dedication to staying fit and healthy. For him, running isn’t just a hobby; it’s a necessity. “Running has mental and physical benefits, especially as I age. I want to be that old guy still running around the track,” he says, and it motivates him every day.

One of the most impressive aspects of Dave’s fitness journey is how he integrates running into his life on the road. Despite the challenges of being a truck driver—long hours of sitting and little access to workout facilities—he finds a way. Dave plans his routes in advance, often scouting out parks or trails where he can stop for a quick run during his 10-hour breaks. Equipped with his headlamp for early morning runs, he’s encountered everything from deer to moose along his travels. He carefully records good running spots in his truck log for future reference, always ready to lace up his shoes.

For Dave, staying active while trucking requires careful planning and a commitment to self-care. “If you don’t move, you lose it,” he says, emphasizing the importance of exercise, stretching, and eating right. His advice to fellow truck drivers is simple: start small, take your time, and build up slowly. Whether it’s a 1-3 km run-walk or just squeezing in body weight exercises during breaks, every little bit helps.

Dave’s commitment to fitness extends beyond his personal goals. He’s participated in the local 5k race for the past three years, raising funds for the Local Community Food Centre. This race is about more than running for him—it’s about family, giving back to the community, and making a positive impact. His team, “McKay Strong,” reflects his commitment to both staying healthy and supporting others.

At the end of the day, Dave believes that staying healthy isn’t just about physical fitness—it’s about planning and making smart choices. Truck drivers may face unique challenges, but with the right mindset and habits, staying active and healthy on the road is achievable. His story serves as an inspiration to all of us, reminding us that no matter where life takes us, we can always find time to prioritize our well-being.
